VYRAQUA purification process can treat lake or river water according to
the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO) and other
international standards.

The main problems which are treated:

- - Turbidity is reduced to less than 5 NTU (if required-down to the recommended
     level of 0.5 NTU).
- - Bacteria are removed. (Coliform bacteria count - 0 CFU/100ml).
- - Other organisms such as parasitic worms are totally eliminated.
- - Color reduction to 5 units.

The process consists of 3 basic steps:

- - Dosing of liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite solution) plus coagulant
     (the specific type depends on raw water analysis) and mixing by a static mixer.
- - Contact filtration by special design deep-bed multi-media filters with
     automatic backwash (optional air/water backwash process).
- - Post treatment by additional liquid chlorine dosing.

Automatic control by a PLC is used for dosing, filtrationand pumps control to assure exact, trouble-free automatic operation. On-line turbidimeter is an option for assuring treated water quality.

For water with very high turbidity and color a clarifier is added upstream to the media filters as a first stage of treatment.

In this case hypochlorite and coagulant are dosed before the clarifier. Sediment is removed from the bottom of the clarifier while clear water flow to the top.

Our clarifier is of advanced design with lamellas, which improve sedimentation efficiency and are made of non-corroding plastics or stainless steel.

Good quality drinking water means for the user acceptable taste and odor
and no health risk. Microbiology is most important because of its effect on
public health. Surface water such as rivers or lakes are usually contaminated
with organic matter and bacteria but chemically safe.
In some cases water may be polluted by heavy metals or poisonous organic
compounds. However, the most important quality criteria for drinking water
remain turbidity and bacteria count.

The common indication for all microbiological contamination is coliform bacteria
count. All drinking water regulations such as WHO (World Health Organization), EPA
(USA regulations) and EEC directives demand zero coliform counts per 100 ml,
while total bacteria counts should be max 100-1000/ml (but not required by WHO).

Turbidity in river water is typically 20-30 NTU (but may reach 500 NTU during spring
run off season).
Filtered water turbidity is an indication of treatment effectivity. In recent years water
quality regulations recommend lower turbidity to prove treatment efficiency especially concerning the removal of microorganisms more resistant to chlorination such as Giardiacysts and Legionella.
The traditionally accepted standard of 5NTU as max. turbidity is no longer accepted and new regulations recommend 1NTU and even go as low as 0.1-0.2 NTU.

To summerize – disinfection and high efficiency filtration are essential for
providing high quality drinking water .
